Someone told me recently there are three things that make for a good habit.
- Make it small
- Make it obvious
- Make it automatic
I’ve done none of these.
Make it small
Some of my longest blog posts have been in the last week. I was able to write those tomes due to a confluence of sitting around at kid sports practices and not having a “daily” writing habit. Those were long-term, well-thought-out pieces. Or at least I’d like to think they were.
Make it obvious
I have my writing process hidden in a “second brain” inside Notion that is anything but obvious. My writing hides under layers of personal > media > ideas > dashboard > publication type > publication site…and more. It’s completely unobvious.
Make it automatic
Publishing was automatic when I had things already written up to publish. That was easy. I copied. I pasted. I published. However, taking words from my brain to a word processing system and then importing them to WordPress seems like so many steps, when I should be able to just publish from the word processing system.
All of this to say: it is Lent. I’m trying to force myself to write every weekday in Lent. I’ve made it so far. Let’s see if I can finish it out.
